Donald Swann wrote primarily for voice and piano, but occasionally he was persuaded to venture into orchestral territory. As always his pieces are wonderfully lyrical.

Dedicated to Gerard Hoffnung, who played the tuba as a hobby, these pieces are held in great affection by brass students.

HAYDN'S SURPRISE SYMPHONY

Haydn's Suprise Symphony with additional surprises, was conceived for the Hoffnung Musical Festival and is the only fully orchestrated work Donald Swann has ever written. Performances have been exclusively assigned to the Hoffnung Estate.

RHAPSODY FROM WITHIN

'Rhapsody from Within' for treble recorder or flute and piano. Commissioned by Carl Dolmetsch and premiered at the Wigmore Hall in 1982.

A recent recording by Piers Adams has prompted considerable interest in this work.
